Announced in September 2026 as an exclusive limited edition of 660 individually numbered pieces worldwide, the Summicron-M 66mm f/2 revives one of the most enigmatic optical legends in Leica history: the ultra-rare Elcan 66mm f/2. Originally formulated by optical luminary Dr. Walter Mandler for the Canadian armed forces and NATO reconnaissance photography, the focal length was specially calculated to deliver exceptional resolving power across high-altitude reconnaissance film formats.

As part of the Leica Classic Line, this modern reinterpretation translates Mandler's classic 6-element, 5-group formula into a refined M-bayonet housing. It features historical-style military engravings, including optical calculation numbers and a classic "Leitz Wetzlar" inscription. The lens retains the distinctive reverse-direction aperture ring of the original military specification, paired with a screw-on metal lens hood and E49 filter thread. Optically, it produces a distinctive vintage signature wide open with gentle spherical softening and harmonious bokeh, snapping into surgical sharpness with rich microcontrast when stopped down.
