Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH
NotableKnown as "King of the Night", "夜神"
The fastest production 50mm lens ever made at launch, and still unmatched. Its combination of f/0.95 maximum aperture, aspherical elements, and characterful bokeh defines the pinnacle of M-mount lens engineering.
Famous for
- The current-production f/0.95 Noctilux — the fastest full-frame M-mount lens Leica makes
- Used values hold remarkably close to new; simultaneously a working tool and collector's item
When Leica announced the Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH in 2008 at $10,495, it provoked both disbelief and desire in equal measure. No production 50mm had ever reached f/0.95 in the modern era. The aperture number is not a typo: f/0.95 gathers roughly 40% more light than f/1.2 and nearly twice as much as f/1.4. In practical terms it means shooting by candlelight or in a dark bar without flash, without raising ISO to damaging levels.
For beginners: depth of field at f/0.95 on a 50mm is measured in millimetres. Focus on someone's near eye and the far eye may already be soft. This is not a flaw — it is a creative tool, but one that demands practiced rangefinder technique. Many photographers buy this lens and spend months learning to use it before a single frame meets their expectations. The payoff is a three-dimensional "pop" and a bokeh quality that no autofocus mirrorless lens yet reproduces despite much higher resolution sensors.
The f/0.95 Noctilux is in current production and fully supported by Leica. Used prices hold remarkably close to new — it is simultaneously a working photographic tool and a collector's item. Budget for the lens, budget for practice, budget for patience.
