The Q2 transformed the Q from cult item to mainstream hit: 47MP, weather sealing, and all-day carry-ability made it the most influential premium compact of its era.

The original Q (2015) proved the concept: a fixed 28mm f/1.7 Summilux on a full-frame sensor, compact enough to carry everywhere, quality enough for professional work. The Q2 (March 2019) made the concept undeniable. The sensor jumped to 47.3MP. The body gained IP52 weather sealing — dust and water resistance serious enough for field use. The lens gained macro capability down to 17cm. And the viewfinder and autofocus both improved.

For newcomers: 47 megapixels on a full-frame sensor means the Q2 can digitally crop to simulate a 35mm, 50mm, or 75mm focal length and still deliver high-resolution files. One camera, one lens, multiple effective focal lengths — that's the Q2's practical superpower.

The Q2 became the camera that turned the Q from a well-regarded enthusiast product into a genuine phenomenon. It won awards, shipped in large quantities, and brought Leica to buyers who had never owned one before. The Q3 followed in 2023, but the Q2 is the model that made the Q line matter.
